School Libraries Matter

In the School Library, students can focus on their own personal and academic interests when selecting reading material. In this EdWeek opinion from world-renowned reading researcher, Stephen Krashen, he argues that Covid learning loss won't be solved by more phonics instruction.  His research shows that the best indicator of improved reading is through increased access to high-interest books.

The benefits associated with good library programs are strongest for the most vulnerable and at-risk learners, including students of color, low-income students, and students with disabilities.

Better test scores have been associated with:

  • How many times a week students visit their libraries,
  • How flexibly their access to libraries is scheduled, and
  • How much they borrow library materials for use elsewhere.
