ABOUT US

students

As a Learning Through Leadership school of choice in Beaufort County School District, we are on a journey of incorporating Steven Covey’s eight effective habits to build individual accountability and academic achievement for all students.   Our school earned Lighthouse Status through The Leader in Me program in the spring of 2018.  We were the 280th school in the world to receive this seal of approval.

At Michael C. Riley, we teach and practice an inside out model of personal development: be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win win; seek first to understand, then be understood; synergize; sharpen the saw; and find your voice.

Students in each class create a Mission Statement to guide their learning. Each Mission Statement supports our school-wide goal of improving performance in English Language Arts and math fluency. Each quarter students define Wildly Important Goals (WIGS) to chart their progress towards meeting academic and personal milestones. Students share their goals and achievements with family members during student led conferences and quarterly celebrations. We have two whole school WIGs, one academic WIG and one cultural WIG:

ACADEMIC WIG
All Eagle Leaders will meet their individualized literacy growth goal by May.

CULTURAL WIG
All Eagle Leaders will participate in at least one community service project by May.

Our students are not just leaders in the classroom, they are leaders throughout the school and in the community. Our school has an established application process for students to apply for leadership roles within our daily life as a school, and during celebrations. Students apply to become tour guides, narrators, greeters, organizers, TV crew, photographers, support staff, and featured speakers. Through our together is better synergy, we created a community of self-directed, goal oriented learners.  We host a Leadership Day each spring to invite the community to visit our school and see our Leader in Me Lighthouse School in action.

We reach out to our students and community to support higher levels of achievement. Our school is a STEM-accredited learning community with two inquiry lab.  Every child from kindergarten to fifth grade participates in hands-on learning opportunities during each Science curriculum unit.  We also feature Advanced Reading courses in grades 2-5 and Advanced Math in 3-5.  The Gifted and Talented Program services students in grades 3-5.

Our student-body features a diverse community with a wide range of needs.  We are able to support our students and their individualized needs through Special Education support, Gifted and Talented courses, English as a Second Language, as well as our social and emotional support from our counselors and social worker.  We offer enrichment programs that allow students to explore their personal interests and talents.  Every student from PreK to 5th grade participate in our Sharpen the Saw Clubs each month.  In grades 2-5, the related arts teachers lead before school Genius Time activities such as dance ensemble, Singing Eagles, and art club.

At Michael C. Riley, we also support the needs of our families and the Bluffton community.  For the past 4 years, Spanish-speaking parents have attended a 10-week course in language literacy through the Latino Family Project. This intense course engaged parents in sharing literature, ideas, and fellowship with one another while building connections with the school.  Each year, our students host food and toy drives for Bluffton Self-Help, supply drives for Family Promise through Leo's Legacy, and collect pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.  Our students are compassionate and generous leaders who are dedicated to making this world a better place.
